Christ’s Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9)

All of the festivals, feasts, and holy days of the Old Testament were fulfilled in Christ. Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the Law for us, so that we are righteous in God's sight. Christ's coming to the world changed everything. We need to always be on guard against the mentality that in order to be pleasing to God, we must fulfill all that the Law demands. While Jesus was still with them, a few of his disciples didn't yet understand the significance of His coming. “And after six days Jesus took with him…continue reading →

Christ’s Miracles (Matthew 8:14-17)

Jesus Christ came to the earth with a purpose. The way that we usually say it is that He came to die for our sins. But I want to express this same truth a different way this morning. Christ came to heal us of the curse of sin. Our sin plagues us like a disease, and Christ came to heal us of that disease. “And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began…continue reading →

Christ’s Temptation (Matthew 4:1-11)

It's truly amazing how Christ fulfilled the whole Law. Mathematically, it's impossible for Jesus to fulfill all of the prophecies of the Old Testament. But Jesus didn't stop there. He fulfilled the stories of the Bible as well, even when there was no explicit prophecy made. The Israelites disobeyed God while in the desert and were sentenced to wander 40 years in the wilderness, and were forced to rely on God to sustain them. Jesus willingly depended on God the Father to sustain Him in the wilderness for 40 days, and remained faithful…continue reading →

Christ’s Baptism (Matthew 3:13-17)

As with many Old Testament prophecies, Isaiah 42:1 has been and will be fulfilled in two stages. The second part of the prophecy, “he will bring justice to the nations” will be accomplished when Christ returns. The first part of the prophecy, “I will put my Spirit upon him,” was fulfilled very clearly Christ was baptized. This is not to say that Jesus did not have the Spirit of God within Him before His baptism. But at His baptism we see it happen visually and unforgettably. “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the…continue reading →

Being a Good Steward of Your Life (2 Corinthians 12:14-15)

Every day that we live, we're a day closer to the day that we'll die. As we age, we start to think about the legacy that we'll leave behind. How should we spend the few years that we have on this earth? In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon came to two vastly different conclusions based on two vastly different presuppositions. If God doesn't exist, then the only logical way to live is for your own enjoyment. If God does exist, then the only logical way to live is in obedience to God. The…continue reading →

Being a Good Steward of Your Mind (2 Corinthians 10:1-6)

We often think of stewardship as something that we have to live out. But stewardship begins far before it comes down to actually doing anything. God would have us be faithful not only in our actions, but in our thoughts. Someone once said, “Let the mind of the Master be the master of your mind.” Being a good steward of your mind means giving Christ lordship of your thoughts. “I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ--I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward…continue reading →
