The Mystery Proclaimed

Book: Ephesians

Isn’t it a little fun to have a secret? When you hear a really good secret, what do you want to do with it? Why do we have the desire to share good secrets? So we like hearing the secrets, and being let in on the secrets, but then we also like sharing the secrets so that they’re not secrets anymore!

Last week, we started talking about the secret that God let us in on. But it’s not a secret that we’re supposed to keep. [1 Chronicles 16:24]

God calls us to proclaim the mystery of Christ to all the world.

Read Ephesians 3:8-13

There are a lot of statistics that we could talk about when it comes to evangelism.

When we look at this chart, we could focus on the negative, but I see it as a positive. God has given us a great message to share! [Luke 2:10]

We should be challenged to be a part of those who see the gospel as worth sharing!3

Paul recognized that sharing the gospel is a blessing. (v. 8-9)

Paul saw himself as the least of all the saints. He was unworthy to carry the message. The gospel is amazing! Paul describes it as the incalculable riches of Christ! [Titus 3:4-7]

And the God who created all things allows us to proclaim the mystery of His plan to all. Now, some might say that the message of God’s grace takes away the need for evangelism. But should we stop celebrating Christmas because gifts are free to the children? It’s a blessing to share the gospel!

Another reason to proclaim the gospel is that it’s only through Jesus that we can be saved. (v. 10-11)

God’s eternal plan is accomplished through Jesus. [Ephesians 1:9-10]

I was talking with a Muslim over the internet recently, and we had a good conversation. We talked about things we agree about: there is only one God, and God is absolutely good. But then we started talking about Jesus. Jesus wasn’t one of many prophets. He wasn’t one of many holy men. Jesus was and is the Savior of all. [1 Timothy 2:5]

And God has given us, the church, the awesome privilege of revealing the gospel to all the world.

When we see how good Jesus is, you place your faith in Him, and begin to share Him with others. (v. 12-13)

Faith in Jesus ignites you to tell others about Him. Through Jesus, we have confident access to God the Father. And with Jesus, we have the boldness to tell others about God’s plan through the gospel.

But not everyone is going to like this message. The gospel is good news, but it offends our pride. Religious people are offended because the gospel is free. Irreligious people are offended because the gospel demands them to repent. So it would be easy to be discouraged as we often see so little results from sharing our faith.

And when you consider how living out our faith can even lead to persecution, we might even get extremely disheartened over it all. And yet, Paul asked the Ephesian church not to be discouraged over the afflictions he’d experienced in sharing the gospel, because they were for their glory. You see, the persecution and afflictions of other believers encourage us and strengthen us to also live out our faith in bold ways.

God has given us a secret to tell to the nations. Let’s tell it.
